The Horror Tree Presents… An Interview with Pete Altieri

Interview with Pete Altieri by B Prouvost

Author, self-publisher, musician and podcaster, Pete Altieri is a busy guy. In a few days he will publish the third installment of his short stories’ collection Creation of Chaos. He took the time to talk to me about this project, and the many others he juggles, from his cool podcast studio in Illinois.

BP: You published the first two volumes of Creation of Chaos in 2018 and 2019. How does this third one work with the others?

PA: I seem to have done well with the other two, especially the first one, and I am anxious to see what my readers think of this one because I feel pretty strong about the stories in it. I love to write short stories, it’s kind of my wheelhouse, and I thankfully come up with a lot of ideas all the time. For this specific collection, I told myself that rather than just throwing twelve or thirteen short stories together, I would really test myself. I wrote some things I have never done before and I relished the challenge, it was fun! For example, I revisited two stories from Creations of Chaos I and II and gave them new endings.

Trembling With Fear 06/27/21

And so the move is done, boxes are unpacked or at least in the loft or shed. Strangely, it feels like a holiday home at the moment as the days are unpressured and we have had some wonderful walks to explore. There is an ongoing saga of internet access with our provider making some awful mistakes, including sending an emergency connection minihub to our old address(!). All ‘should’ be sorted in that respect by the end of the month. But I can get online securely, though at a snail’s pace – phew. Not quite normal service resumed – but almost!

I had some good news also from Silver Shamrock Publishing with the acceptance of my story, ‘Unravelling’, for their latest anthology, Midnight From Beyond The Stars. I am particularly delighted because I appear alongside TWF’s co-editor, Amanda Headlee. I’ve also been following TWF’s Patrick Winters – a wonderful writer and contributor – and seen his post about taking on an editorial role for Black Ink Fiction’s Odd Playthings anthology. It’s been great to see his career develop. He deserves all the success!  Horror Tree folk are taking over!

On a side note, if you fancy a folk horror fix, my collection As the Wheel Turns – More Tales from the Weald is now available here http://mybook.to/AsTheWheelTurns. Plus I believe our Horror Tree anthologies are almost at publication stage!

Before we go to the stories, here’s my usual weekly reminder to check out the submission guidelines for TWF. Also remember we are currently closed to short stories (unless for one of the Specials) but open to drabbles, unholy trinities and serials.

The first story this week in Trembling with Fear is The Well by K.A. Moreno. Told in a child’s voice with their black and white understanding of the world, you start to feel somewhat uneasy about what is left unsaid. Is this child as innocent as she seems or is it her mother who has something to hide? The undercurrent of the story is very dark, as dark as whatever resides in the well.

The Bloodcoats are Coming! The Bloodcoats are Coming! by C.A. Chesse uses an historical event to nice effect. More historical horror please!

The Last Laugh by Liam Spinage is a nice bloody twist on news received too late.

Quarry is a short tale I penned after a visit to an abandoned limestone quarry in Minera. It is now a wildlife site with lots of tunnels to explore – places you really shouldn’t go into!

Enjoy our stories and send in yours!

Steph

Stephanie Ellis

Editor, Trembling With Fear

As I mentioned last week, just like Steph, I’m preparing to move. As of the time you’re reading this, I’m under a week away from it being official. Terrifying!

That hasn’t slowed me down at all though. We’ve got the full Trembling With Fear covers in and are now in KDP. Pre-orders should hopefully begin during the upcoming week. Score! Also, I know that I mentioned we would be doing a site redesign soon. We just found a way to do so that will make the site even faster. While it will push the front page redesign back a little, it should increase the overall experience of the site for everyone. Hopefully! We’re also looking at a way to better read older Trembling With Fear stories for those who are just here for the fiction. I have a few ideas but it’ll be after the above mentioned redesign that it takes place. Thanks Ivalia for the suggestion!

Back to Trembling With Fear, I would just like to throw this out there for all the writers, we’re a bit low on drabbles at the moment so if you have a 100-word story that you’ve been thinking about sending in, now would be a great time! Thanks!

‘Time Paradox’ Blog Tour: “Pillow Dance” Excerpt

Pillow Dance

Their jovial attitudes were having a positive effect on the results. They enjoyed this chapter in their psychic education, and the progress was faster than telepathy. Despite appearances, the crew had a level take on the exercise.

One day, the fun ratcheted up another notch. Larger objects were being moved when a pillow flew across the room and hit Derak in the head. He picked up Shesain’s internal laughter and shot a pillow back across the room at her, catching her off guard and knocking her back on her couch. Rising from the shock, her eyes grew wide, and she returned the favor. This time, Derak deflected the pillow, and it hit Robert in the chest, causing him to lose concentration. Someone requested more pillows from Terga and when they appeared, Shenar shot one across the room and smacked Jack in the face. Before they knew it, they were in a full-fledged pillow fight, running and dodging each other’s aims. Derak hit two targets at once, and Jack was getting good at deflection.

The raucous laughter from the room could be heard all the way on the bridge, and Qex marched back, followed by Vel. As Qex opened the door, three pillows were headed in his direction; they stopped in mid-air, inches from his face. All the pillows hung in mid-air, then dropped to the floor.

Vel countered the disgust showing on Qex’s face, trying hard not to laugh. Qex shot a look at her. The smile left her face, and he faced the crew. “You’re worse than Telaxian children. If these antics did not help you in your lessons as much as it does, I would put an immediate halt to it. I see you have moved into deflection. If you employ such childish methods, at least keep the noise down.” He turned and headed back to the bridge, followed by a grinning Vel.

The Razorblades in My Head by Donnie Goodman

Reviewed by: Janine Pipe

The Razorblades in my Head is the debut short story collection from horror buff, Donnie Goodman. I will preface this review by saying that I love Donnie, he’s got heart and he’s got chops. He is a supporter of the community and someone I genuinely enjoy interacting with and trust to beta read my own work.

All that aside, I had been excited to read this collection since Donnie first announced it, having beta read some other shorts for him not in this compilation.

The first story from the collection that I read separately due to its individual mini-release, was The Old Bay King. That cemented the anticipation.

Unholy Trinity: Unholy Trinity of the Moon by Cole Todd

Our church worships at the altar of the Unholy Trinity. Its gospels are delivered as a trio of dark drabbles, linked so that Three become One. All hail the power of the Three.

Blood Moon

Every child knows the Moon Rules, and how to keep safe. The problem was the moon wasn’t playing by the rules any more.

Blood Moon always brings conflict; the Border Wars started like clockwork every seven years under its crimson tint. Stay inside and speak to no-one, because whoever you see will want to kill you by night’s end. But now Blood Moon brought literal blood – great gouts of it fell from the sky like rain, stinking in the fields and coating the streets. Blood brought rats, rats brought plague, and the plague brought mass graves, deep as sea caves.

Super Moon

Everyone knows Super Moon brings super tides. Tsunamis, flooding, everyone within a hundred miles of the coast just packs up and leaves. Better than staying and drowning in the white-washed night.

But this year Super Moon grew so big it flood-lit the whole sky; no-one could sleep for a month with that celestial searchlight glaring through brick and stone, melting glass and burning skin. Its unforgiving light showed every sin thought secret, worming their way to the surface of your loved ones’ faces. A fifth of the population went blind from the constant glare, and they were the lucky ones.

Black Hole Moon

Black Hole Moon is a great dark ring covering a third of the sky, its pale eye shining in the centre. Scientists used to think it was caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere; until the moon blinked, and there was one less star in the sky. Every year we lost light.

Until this year, when the black hole grew bigger, and the moon shrank and shrank; then it disappeared entirely. We prayed to the gods we had given up on, for the moon never to return.

Today scientists said it won’t: for the black hole is still growing…

Cole Todd

Cole Todd worked as a therapist and counselling supervisor before becoming disabled with ME-CFS. She used this life change as an opportunity to pursue her passion for stories, and now writes flash fiction, short stories, novels and self-help articles about identities and relationships. She is also composing a workshop to help others utilise writing as a way to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Cole loves crafts and walking in the Scottish countryside, which often inspires her creative work.

Closed: The Society of Misfit Stories Magazine

Bards and Sages Publishing closed in March of 2024 with the following announcement:

Closure Announcement

Effective March 6, 2024, I will begin the process of winding down Bards and Sages Publishing. There is a lot that needs to be unraveled and sorted out before I can formally close everything down. The most immediate impact is the closure of the Bards and Sages Quarterly and ceasing publication of new issues.

If you are an author or artist who was previously published in an issue of the Bards and Sages Quarterly, those issues will remain on sale until the end of 2024. After that, all back issues will be removed from sale, and all rights will revert to their respective authors.

The same is true for back issues of The Society of Misfit Stories and all of our anthologies. These will remain on sale through the end of the year and then unpublished. At that time, all rights will revert back to their respective authors and artists.

I’ve already informed our authors that we have stand-alone publishing contracts with about the decision. I will work with those authors individually to make sure all of their rights revert to them in a timely manner, and provide them with any raw files we have of their books. They will be free to use those files to either self-publish or take to another publisher if they wish.

Regarding our RPG offerings: I own all rights to the RPG materials through work-for-hire agreements. If other publishers are interested in buying the rights to any of our RPG products or properties, I will entertain offers. Email [email protected] to discuss.

With that out of the way, I want to provide the reasons for this decision.

As I have noted previously, I have been struggling with mental health issues for some time now. I am being treated for generalized anxiety and depression, and though my condition has improved, I’m still not where I feel I need to be to properly commit the time and effort needed to being an effective publisher.

At the end of last year, I was diagnosed with additional physical health issues that will require surgery and treatment. While none of them are life-threatening, they are an additional weight that requires my attention.

As most people who have known me a while also realize, publishing has always been my love, but it has never been my primary income source. Like a lot of micro presses, I have a proverbial “day job,” and that day job has become increasingly more complex over the last few years.

All of these issues impacted my decision. However, I also have to confess to what may have been the final straws. AI…and authors behaving badly.

I am spending four to five hours a week trudging through submissions just to weed out AI-generated trash. I have editorial assistants who actually read and review the submissions, but I still look at every submission myself first to make sure I am weeding out the obvious junk before wasting their time, otherwise the submission response rate would take 20 months. Just over the weekend, I rejected twenty obviously AI generated submissions. My inbox is flooded with it.

Meanwhile, Amazon and other ebook retails are pushing full-steam ahead to promote AI-generated content at the expense of real authors and artists. Publisher who actually pay authors and artists and editors now have to compete with AI-generated material churned out in bulk and sold at 99 cents. And while it is easy to shrug this off if you are outside the industry and claim, “Well, the cream rises to the top,” anyone that has been around the industry long enough knows that what rises to the top is what Amazon’s algorithms push there. And the AI bots are much better at manipulating the algorithms that real people.

Two to three times a month, I need to fight with Amazon over negative reviews that get spammed on multiple books because an author got upset about a story being rejected. Or I get some snark response back about how my reviewers need better training, or that I am not a “real” editor, or something outright vulgar. Or I get a prank call to my phone. These sort of people have always lurked around the industry, so I am not unaccustomed to dealing with them. But it seems like they have grown more emboldened, and there seems to be this weird social currency tied to the bad behavior now.

With everything else I have going on right, I do not have the mental energy to deal with these people.

To be clear, the majority of authors and artists I have worked with over the decades have been wonderful. But the number of badly-behaving individuals, and the increased level of hostility they bring to the industry, has gotten to be too much.

My goal is to have everything closed down by the end of the year. Emails to Bards and Sages will still be active, so if you are an author or artist or publisher with questions, you will still be able to reach me. The Contact page will get updated with this information to make it easier to communicate. Social media accounts will also remain active so I can be reached through those as well.

To those of you I have had the pleasure of working with over the decades, thank you for being a part of Bards and Sages Publishing. I am extremely proud of the works we produced over the years and I hope you are as well.

With Love and Respect,

Julie Ann Dawson
