Ongoing Submissions: The Razor

Payment: $100
Theme: Literary Fiction

About The Razor:

The Razor is a literary magazine produced by Gotham Writers Workshop. We publish two pieces each month—one fiction, one nonfiction. For now, we do not publish poetry (though we so appreciate the poet’s artistry with words). Each published piece will also be presented in audio format.

What we’re looking for:

The Razor wants your best story in a 2,000-word box.

The story that could have been 3,000 words, but didn’t need to be.

Surprise us with how deep your simplicity can be. That doesn’t mean we don’t like literary, or stories that take place in a character’s head. Be it minimal or maximal, send us a story where every moment counts. Where every word counts.

Drop into your box a single pristine jewel, or fill it with mud that’s crawling with worms. Just make sure it stays in the box, whatever it is.

Bare necessities:

  • No more than 2,000 words. No less than zero words.
  • Don’t stress about format. Focus on the story.

  • No multiple submissions. Send one thing at a time. When a decision has been made, feel free to submit again.
  • We read submissions blind. Your identifying information is not visible to the editors until a decision has been made. Please do not include any identifying information in the body of your work.
  • We are aiming to get back within three months of the date of submission, but we’re new, so we’re feeling out that response time and hope to respond much sooner.
  • We nominate for Pushcart and Best of the Net.
  • Any questions, feel free to find us on Twitter ( and ask there. If you have a question, chances are others might also. Or email [email protected].

Submission information

  • We ask for first publication rights. After publication you’re welcome to publish elsewhere, in a book or an anthology or wherever. Please credit The Razor as first publication if it is indeed picked up elsewhere.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted, just let us know if it’s accepted elsewhere.
  • We pay $100 per accepted piece
