HOW TO CREATE DARK WORLDS - Step by Step Worldbuilding

An Author’s Guide to Worldbuilding Horror, Dark Fantasy, and Grimdark

Want to create a world with a dark and ominous feel, but don’t know where to start? Need help worldbuilding the shadows? Not sure if you’re evil enough?

How to Create Dark Worlds breaks the process down into easy-to-follow steps. By completing a series of creative prompts, this book will show you how to cast darkness over your fictional world.

Who knew bugs could become demonic?

A year ago, a series of earthquakes hit around the world. The damage and loss of life were devastating, and the world became weird but no more than in the quake zone known as Broken Brooklyn. Bugs became demonic, demons invaded, and people with psychic abilities grew stronger.

Frank Carver and Hector Ramirez, two exterminators, and Jenny Blake, a woman who can talk to ghosts, have created a business to take out these new pests. And business is booming.

When Frank, Jenny, and Hector come across a giant bug, things get even odder: friends go missing, a single female bedbug becomes a prized possession, and Jenny keeps finding bug-possessed people. Frank’s daughter, Angela, an unwilling participant, hears of the coming of the bug king.

As Jenny, Frank, and Hector keep hunting for the female bug and missing friends, they wonder if they are getting closer to what or who caused the earthquake.

STEP INTO THE WORLD OF THE DARK MAN: PLEASE HAVE YOUR REFERRAL READY…
An abused child encounters the local legendary boogeyman, and finds himself querying the definition of ‘monster’…
Two time-travellers observe The Crucifixion, and discover a horror far beyond the brutality of the event itself…
An inhuman predator establishes its feeding ground in a small rural town—but does it have competition…?
In this collection, representing the darker work of award-nominated author Chuck McKenzie, you’ll find tales of zombies, kaiju, and alien invaders; of visits to Hell, and to quiet suburban streets; of Lovecraftian entities and spectral terrors. And other, far less pleasant tales than these…

Dark doings are afoot in the forests of Charwood…

After joining the Tenders, a band of backwoods activists claiming to solve climate change by burning trees for energy, Orna Tannenbaum falls in with Rowan, their odd yet charming leader. But when she uncovers what the Tenders are really up to in the forest, she must apply the ancient wisdom of her culture to battle dark forces threatening to gain a foothold in our world.

An ecological Jewish folk horror novel 5,783 years in the making.

“Schlossberg delivers a blend of Jewish mysticism, the supernatural, and current day environmental challenges in this thought provoking tale that will leave you thinking about it long after you turn the last page.”
–Daniel Braum, author of The Night Marchers and Other Strange Tales

“There is eco-horror. There is religious apocalypse. And then there is Charwood. I promise you will have never read anything like this powerful evocation of ancient Jewish mysticism and the Kabbalah, seamlessly coupled with topical headlines about deforestation and climate change.”
–Elana Gomel, author of Nightwood

“Charwood is a seamless fusion of Jewish mysticism and ecological horror, thrilling and terrifying in equal measure.”
–Richard Dansky, author of Ghost of a Marriage

UK authors Keith Anthony Baird and Beverley Lee firmly believed it was time to write a vampire tale which explored a different kind of origin story. Thus, the passion project which would become a rich and deliciously dark novella emerged to garner interest from Kansas-based publisher Brigids Gate Press.

Set for release in November 2024, the book ‘A Light of Little Radiance’ will be available worldwide in a number of formats and feature cover art by the illustrator Daniella Batsheva. This is an all-round collaborative effort, involving talented creators eager to bring the story to life (even if undead).

About the film:  The documentary is the telling of another tale: of the book’s inception – the collaboration process – the road to market, and will be a film that encapsulates the atmosphere and premise of the book itself.

Shot on location in the UK, the production will be in the safe hands of Mycho Entertainment Group, Milton Keynes, with a nod to Disturbia Films, Vancouver, Canada. The authors will provide insight into all of the above and a lone actor is set to portray the main character Selina in various locales throughout. All in all, it will prove an interesting and atmospheric journey into the world of dark fiction publishing.

As backers, you will have the chance to get yourselves written into the book’s story. Not only that, film credits, appearing as an extra, or being named as a co-producer (in name only) on the documentary are all up for grabs in the perks!

So just imagine your name appearing in a published piece of fiction and/or on screen worldwide. The aim of the campaign is to see WOLF MOON FURY released via a streaming service post production. That might be Prime Video, Shudder, or a similar service.*

Story

‘Heavily inspired by the likes of Bernie Wrightson and Alan Moore, this was initially planned as a series of graphic novels.
I even remember bothering Neil Gaiman at a book signing in the ’90s.

Paradox Press and Kitchen Sink Press expressed interest but went bankrupt before anything saw the light of day.
After an interview with DC Comics where they insisted they were only interested in their foundational characters (they were about to go bankrupt in those days, but the movies saved them), I decided to forge ahead with illustrated novels …’

Note: These shelves are very much ‘reminders’ of the magazines that are out there, so the covers might not change too often! Please let me know if there are magazines, journals, periodicals we are not aware of.

Happy reading.
