Suction Cup Dreams: An Octopus Anthology Deadline: January 31, 2012 Payment: $20 and 1 Contributor's Copy What We Want SUCTION CUP DREAMS: An Octopus Anthology, features ca. 15 short fiction stories dealing with the most fascinating and noble of marine lifeforms, the octopus. We welcome all subgenres and forms of fiction, spanning genres and styles, from romance, historical fiction, crime dramas, to sci-fi horror. We are looking for short stories which either showcase or are inspired by the octopus as a central theme. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2012. No entries will be accepted beyond this deadline. What We Don't Want We will not accept stories which have the octopus theme obviously shoehorned in after the fact. We do not want stories about tentacled, non-octopus creatures. We do not want tales about Cthulhu - there are enough stories dedicated to him, and he isn't an octopus (although a Lovecraftian style tale would be allowed if it dealt with octopodes specifically). We are not looking for poetry. And we don't want a large amount of vulgarity or sexual perversion, though erotica is accepted. Multiple Submissions and Reprints We accept up to two (2) multiple submissions for review. Each one must be sent via its own separate email. Reprints are permissable, as long as prior publication is mentioned and described in the cover letter. Pay Rate We offer one contributor's copy of the book as payment. In 2012, Pendragon Press will be publishing its first ever e-anthology – and a sequel to Christopher C Teague's original Nasty Snips in 1999 (which kick-started the entire journey into madness which is book publishing). This time around, he will be joined by Katy O'Dowd, Ross Anthony Warren and Esther Sherman in the unenviable task of reading for this, a truly OPEN anthology for anyone! We are looking for short, sharp and shocking tales of the flash fiction variety – that is 1000 words or less. Dark Faith 2 Deadline: January 31st 2012 Payment: 5 cents a word, up to 4000 words Apex will be publishing a follow-up to the Nebula, Bram Stoker, and Black Quill-nominated anthology Dark Faith. The book will be 80,000 words and pay five cents a word (up to four thousand words). It will debut late-summer 2012. We buy First World anthology print rights and digital rights (for three years). We’re looking for the story only you could write, something deeply personal and at the same time universal. Everyone believes in something and we want you to put those beliefs to the test. We’re looking for smart, literate stories that don’t proselytize or stereotype. Stories that make you think, that comment on the human condition and the social order. Stories that are rich in their use of language. However, as much as we love social commentary, don’t forget to entertain us. The best way to get a feel for what we’re looking for is to read Dark Faith. Submissions will be accepted from 1/1/2012 until 1/31/2012. Deadline: January 31, 2012 Payment: Exposure Only prose fiction The Dead Walk Again is a conceptual piece oriented around a few basic concepts: A zombie apocalypse has occurred. The Dead have risen from their graves and anyone that dies from anything besides serious head trauma will reanimate as a member of the walking dead. A group of survivors somewhere in the United States have set up a website to allow very basic communication among other survivors through surviving PDA and wireless devices. That people from all over the country have sent in their personal narratives to be told on their site. I want to see an emphasis on realism whenever possible in storytelling. We are very much focused on the few survivors of a society that has shut down by zombies roaming in hordes around the country. Outside of that one conceit, the world is pretty much just a blasted out facsimile of our own. A few solid resources exist to tell what would happen to our country and world if our cities were suddenly abandoned and taken over by wildlife and can be found in the master reference list below. Zombies in the world of The Dead Walk Again are very traditional. They are shambling monstrosities with no recognizable brain function outside of walk and eat (humans). Outside of humans and dogs, they show no sign of interest in eating any traditional North American animals. They can only be killed by damage to the brain. They suffer from rot and decay, but will not continuously rot until nothing is left of their bodies. A bite from a zombie will pass the infection on. William Hope Hodgson’s “The Voice in the Night” and its Japanese adaptation, Matango, terrified and fascinated the editors. And - now, they’re back for more. Fungi is an anthology of dark speculative fiction (horror, fantasy, science fiction, and any other variant, such as steampunk) focused solely on the fungal. No happy mushrooms from Mario Bros. A fungus of some type must be a key element in the story, not just a throwaway element. A character can attempt to poison someone with a mushroom, mushroom cultivation may be of importance to the story, the dark patch of mould on the ceiling may begin to terrify an unhappy tenant, a group of people may consume hallucinogenic mushrooms, etc. We are looking for a variety of settings and protagonists.
