Taking Submissions: Frozen Fairy Tales

Deadline: May 15th, 2015 Payment: $20 and Contributor's Copy In the bleak midwinter, the call of fairy tales can be especially irresistible. After all, fairy tales both take us out of our humdrum world and into the possibilities of what can be--or maybe even is. A fairy tale read in winter can help us dream through the the cold days and nights. Yet, surprisingly few fairy tales are specifically set in winter. With Frozen Fairy Tales, we're hoping to remedy that. In a joint venture between World Weaver Press and Enchanted Conversation: A Fairy Tale Magazine, we're opening up to submissions for a fairy tale collection set in winter. Details are below. 1) You must be 18 or older to submit. 2) Submissions must be in English, but submissions from all over the world are most welcome. 3) No stories connected to the movie Frozen will be considered. It's a great movie, but this anthology is not at all about that film. 4) Stories centered on winter holidays are most welcome, but stories do not need to be holiday focused. Krampus-themed stories will be considered, but please do not resubmit stories that were previously submitted for the Krampusnatch collection. 5) A sense of winter and its perils and possibilities must be part your story. 6) This is a fairy tale collection, which means the sensibility of the stories should evoke classic fairy tales. You do not need to retell famous fairy tales reset in winter, but you may. Nonetheless, the classics have been retold a lot lately, so fresher takes with more originality stand a better chance of being selected, as do retellings of obscure fairy tales. But think winter! 7) Please, no erotica, children's stories, hard-core horror, or sci-fi. This anthology is aimed at an audience age 15 or older. 8) Open submission period: March 6 - May 15,...

We are happy to announce that the reading period for Sword & Sorceress 30 will start in April 2015 (see exact dates below). If you wish to submit a story to the anthology, please follow the Guidelines below. Guidelines Stories should be the type generally referred to as "sword and sorcery" and must have a strong female protagonist whom the reader will care about. See Sword & Sorceress 22, Sword & Sorceress 23, Sword & Sorceress 24, Sword & Sorceress 25, Sword & Sorceress 26, Sword & Sorceress 27, and Sword & Sorceress 28 (or S&S 1-20) for examples. We do not want stories with explicit sex, gratuitous violence, or profanity. We are NOT a market for poetry. We are willing to consider stories set in modern times (urban fantasy), but we won't buy more than one or two of those for the anthology. We always want something short and funny for the last story. No reprints. No simultaneous submissions. With regard to multiple submissions, do not submit more than one story at a time. If we've rejected your first one, you may send one more, as long as it's before the deadline. We have occasionally bought someone's second submission. We have never bought a third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, or eighth submission. If you send us two stories, and we don't hold either of them, wait until next year to try again. Please do not re-submit stories we have already rejected (including stories rejected in previous years). If you have not previously sold to Sword & Sorceress, please read "What is a Short Story?" and "Why Did my Story Get Rejected?" before submitting to us....

Taking Submissions: Whispers from the Abyss Volume 2

Deadline: May 30th, 2015 Payment: A penny per word up to 4500 words and a digital copy of the anthology. Two physical copies will be provided once the book is printed in 2016 WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: We’re looking for short stories between 2500-4500 words that can be read in one sitting. Flash fiction is also welcome. We want authors hungry to play in the twisted universe envisioned by H.P. Lovecraft, or write tales that are in the spirit of his mythos. Like Lovecraft’s own work, the horror in this anthology aims to be subtle and subjective. The mind and its inner working are a far more terrifying place than the actual corridors of R’lyeh or the Mountains of Madness. Ideally this anthology should hit readers like a really good mix tape (or iMix for those of you too young to remember what a cassette is). We want a variety of styles, themes, and moods that hook the readers fast, creep the hell out of them, and leave them wanting more. Experimentation is highly encouraged–especially unconventional narrative styles, meta-fiction, genre mash-ups, even sick humor. Of course, don’t be afraid to stick with the tried and true “ravings of a madman,” if that’s your jones. PAY RATE: A penny per word up to 4500 words and a digital copy of the anthology. Two physical copies will be provided once the book is printed in 2016. WHAT WE’RE NOT LOOKING FOR: Consider this anthology to have a hard R rating. That said, please no stories involving graphic rape or child molestation. Excessive gore is fine, but must function to further the story. Here is a list of themes and elements that will get your story instantly rejected: 1. Cthulhu taking center stage. The big cheese can appear in dreams, statues, visions, etc....

Taking Submissions: Quick Shivers from the Midwest

Deadline: $10 and contributor's copy Payment: May 30th, 2015 Note: Only writers around the Great Lakes: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and New York, and Ontario) “Quick Shivers from the Midwest” will feature ONLY “Midwest” writers, by which we arbitrarily define as someone who lives in a state or province contiguous with the Great Lakes (which includes Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and New York, and Ontario) or who self-identify as Midwestern. The deadline for submissions is May 30. The gritty details: –Written submissions (stories or poems) must contain EXACTLY 100 words including title. Submissions can be sent in the body of an email message, or as a .doc or .pdf attachment. –Email submissions to: anthology @ dailynightmare.com. –Include theme and the number of the inspirational nightmare in the SUBJECT line. For example: Midwest, #341 or Bugs, #22. –Include a brief bio (~ 25 – 50 words) with the submission so we don’t have to track you with our hellhounds. What are we looking for? We at the DailyNightmare groove on the idea of inhabiting each other’s dreams, even the nasty, ooky ones, and our anthologies are one step toward that kind of communal nightmare-scape. 100 words aren’t many, so sharpen at least one point of the narrative pentacle: mood, character, plot, setting, theme, and try to imbue your piece with a “sense of completion.” Poetry or prose, matters not; word count does. DailyNightMare.com celebrates literate terror (or “snob horror” if you will), so heighten the language, make every syllable count and don’t be afraid to mean something. Multiple submissions are AOK, though no more than 13 per author. If you submit your own nightmare with your story, be advised that we publish the nightmares under a Creative Commons, attribution license. Basically, other folks can use the nightmares...

(PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING POETRY FOR THIS CALL) The only hard requirement for this anthology is that it be one of the genres mentioned above. We would like new spins on old monster tropes as well as all new monsters. Submissions open December 1st 2014 and close June 31st 2015.
