Taking Submissions: Silence in the City

Deadline: September 15, 2021
Payment: 6 cents per word
Theme: A city gone silent

Sudden disruptions in power and other major services sends a city into chaos. In the blink of an eye, the modern technological world fails. Is it a government plot? Experiment gone wrong? A foreign cyber attack? Alien invasion? A mystical incursion from beings beyond this dimension? Who knows? Now the noise and the bustle of the city has vanished and an eerie silence settles over the urban landscape. Within, there are stories of human violence, depravity, and desperation, but also heroism, selflessness, and sacrifice. Silence in the City is an anthology of speculative tales asking what happens when a city—and all of modern civilization—is plunged into darkness.

Taking Submissions: Felis Futura: An Anthology of Future Cats

Deadline: December 31st, 2021
Payment: 1/word ($5 minimum.) for accepted fiction, $10 per accepted poem
Theme: Stories about the future which feature cats

Submissions are open for Felis Futura: An Anthology of Future Cats (working title) from Manawaker Studio, edited by CB Droege.

Felis Futura is an anthology focused on stories about the future which feature cats. This volume will contain stories, poetry, and visual art.

THEME

Submitted works should be of any genre, as long as the work depicts a world that is noticeably in the future. Hard and Soft Sci-fi, (Post-)apocalyptic, Solarpunk, Slipstream, Fantasy, Magical Realism, Alternate (future) History, Supernatural, Retro-futurism etc. are all fine names for genres that often take place in the future, but your story doesn’t have to fit into one of those. In fact, if it manages to miss all of those labels, we may be even more interested to see it (unless it thus falls into what we specifically don’t want (see next paragraph)). All works must also prominently feature at least one cat. It does not have to be a cat of the genus Felis. Other members of the cat family are also acceptable, as are non-biological cats, metaphorical cats, robots with the acronym K.A.A.T., and so on.

Taking Submissions: Parenting Stories Gone Speculative

Deadline: September 1st, 2021
Payment: Equal split of $500 between all accepted authors
Theme: short parenting stories—CNF or fiction—that incorporate the weird, the surreal, or the speculative into the parenting narrative in some way.

You know those personal parenting essays you read in The New York Times? We don’t want those. We want your short, short parenting stories—CNF or fiction—that incorporate the weird, the surreal, or the speculative into the parenting narrative in some way. We want ghosts and robots and Children of the Corn. We want angry shouts into the void. We want deep love that withstands tidal waves. We want small, everyday moments that turn inside out. We want to be disturbed, to laugh, to whimper, to gasp at the audacity of a parent telling us THAT. Are you not a parent, but you are or were put into a parent-like role and something unexpected and/or creepy and/or mystical happened? We want to read your story, too. We want exceptional writing. We want purposeful prose. We want you and your words! (more…)

Taking Submissions: And the walls Came Crashing Down

Deadline: September 1st, 2021
Payment: $15
Theme: Stories taking place at the Rangeley Park which all of the details are below.

There’s hardly a mansion in New England that’s been spared the aesthetic travesty wrought by the march of time. Ivy carpets stone; paint peels and shingles crack. And weeds force asunder the masonry. No longer home to families who command pocketbooks big enough for their upkeep or who can afford to house and employ a cadre of servants, the stately old homes of centuries past, the pride of the towns in which they sat, a beacon of wealth and power, today stand abandoned and in ruins. Or, worse still, have been crudely apportioned into apartments, populated by drunken students with no regard for the lifetime of attention and energy countless maids, who must surely now lie spinning in their graves, dedicated to keeping their rooms spic-and-span. In other cases, it is not educated men who hold the world in their fingertips who tread the squeaky floorboards of stately parlors, once symposiums that rivaled Socrates’ himself, but dentists, who encourage their patients to spit in the open, utterly in contrast with the rules of social decorum.

Taking Submissions: DeadSteam II

Deadline: August 16th, 2021
Payment: $25 plus a contributor’s copy.
Theme: gaslamp and dreadpunk stories, which embrace the Victorian gothic

Submissions are now open for the DeadSteam II anthology, the second Grimmer & Grimmer Books anthology.

DeadSteam II is a collection of more gaslamp and dreadpunk stories, which embrace the Victorian gothic. In this edition, we’re really focusing on driving home the dread. We want your scariest, darkest stories that embrace the classic traditions of horror (monsters, gothic castles & haunted houses, dark and stormy nights, foggy walks through gas-lit cobblestone streets) but pair them with modern sensibilities and pacing.

About the anthology

Your tale should include at least one monstrous or undead creature, be it a werewolf, a ghost, a witch, a zombie, or something along those lines, and should take place in or before the Victorian era. Bear in mind, this isn’t a typical steampunk anthology, so the cogs and gears should be used sparingly, if at all.

I want your chilling tales of haunted London, your ghastly stories of bloodthirsty murderers lurking in gaslit alleyways, your suspenseful tales of dead things coming back to life to consume the blood of the living.
