This week’s writing prompt:

Your protagonist lives in the countryside, near farmland where cattle, horses, sheep, and chickens are kept. The smell of manure, animal noises, and swarms of house flies are regular everyday occurrences.

But after cleaning up their yellow sticky fly papers, your protagonist notices a white substance on the house flies’ corpses. They research this odd change and discover the existence of a parasite that can infect house flies and control them to death.

Yet the protagonist notes that the parasite makes the fly climb up high somewhere and allow the spores to drift to other flies. So why were the flies dying on the yellow sticky paper on a plant low to the ground instead?

Your protagonist shrugs this off, until they hear the news of cattle dying with a white substance coating their skin.

What happens next is up to you…Let your imagination run wild!

If you’d like an early preview of our prompts, subscribe to our newsletter!

We list every Sunday in our newsletter in advance. If you’d like us to read over your work, please use the form below! We do get a LOT of e-mails at Horror Tree, so we can’t promise to respond, but we’ll absolutely try! If you’d like to give us the option to also include your story in next week’s prompt, be sure to include a bio and click the correct checkbox. (I suggest only doing so if this is something extremely short as if we do print it on the website most markets would think of this as a reprint moving forward and we’d rather see you get paid for your work)
