Likely Red is open year-round for submissions in prose, poetry, photography, and almost everything else. While we may prioritize local authors and artists for consideration from time to time, we encourage folks from anywhere to let us see what they’ve got. We try to keep an open mind. We publish what we like. There is no submission fee. We pay.
Email your prose, poetry, photography, art, or piece to the editor at Editor [at] LikelyRed [dot] com. We only accept submissions in English and all submissions must be previously unpublished. We accept simultaneous submissions, but please email us as soon as possible if a piece you’ve submitted to us gets accepted elsewhere.
Genre Guidelines
For Prose: We like our prose to be under 4000 words. We accept fiction and creative non-fiction. Please only send one piece at a time and wait for a response before sending another. Send your story or essay in an email to the editor in PDF (preferred) or in .doc format.
For Poetry: Keep poetry under 100 lines. It will need a title. Send up to five poems in one email to the editor in PDF (preferred) or .doc format.
For Photography: Submit up to 3 photos for us to consider at a time in an email to the editor. Keep file sizes low enough to email and please don’t stress over the quality of the photograph. If necessary, indicate the quality loss and let us know if you have a higher quality version. If your photography is accepted, we’ll let you know when we need the higher quality version.
For Everything Else: This category includes everything from digital paintings, short video clips, comics, gifs, memes, interviews, choose-your-own-adventure stories, experimental blueprints, audio logs, laboratory results, web games, artful code, or anything else that you’ve got going on that you think fits our aesthetic. Just be sure that it will work without any extra software on the website and that you can get it to us in an email without too much trouble. Bonus points if we can figure out what it is and how it works without a manual. The shorter and more focused the idea, the better.
Cover Letters: We couldn’t care less about cover letters. Make sure your name, telephone number, and email address are on the front page or in the body of the email. If you have a Twitter account, we’d like that, too.
Response Times
We try to acknowledge all submissions within a couple of days. Give us two months to make a decision. If you haven’t heard from us within 60 days, please send us an email or aggravate us on Twitter.
Our editor is mean and either can’t or won’t give individual feedback on every piece due to the time, as well as an unfortunate social incident that occurred in his deep dark past.
Payments
We pay contributors $25 (usd) upon acceptance. We know it’s not much. As our journal grows, we are open to exploring ways to increase this amount.
Rights
We ask for first publication rights for us to publish your story online as well as archival rights for us to keep a copy of your story in our online archives. After publication, all writers and artists continue to hold all rights to their work. Please kindly indicate Likely Red as the first publisher if the work is published again.
All content is subject to minor edits for formatting purposes. We may also add text and alter colors to digital media for our use of the work in other locations on the website and social media, including headers and advertisements.
