Payment: $100
Theme: Must take place in Omnipark (details linked below.)

Taking Submissions: No Ordinary Mortals

Deadline: August 1st, 2020
Payment: $30
Theme: Super heroes!

Super-powered pulp heroes. Supers with a single power who fight crime or villains. Good folks versus bad folks, no gray areas, no amorality, no Byronic heroes. And no non-powered heroes. So think of characters like Doc Savage, the Rocketeer, Zorro, The Phantom, and Flash Gordon, but with powers and ideals like Superman and Wonder Woman (in their earlier renditions). Sorry, this means no Punisher, Logan, or even The Batman. It also means no Superman or Wonder Woman with those surplus of powers. Blatantly heroic original-to-the-author-only characters with no ambiguity in their pursuit of stopping villainous behavior. Super Beings & Wondrous Entities only.

Current or alternate or future world settings. No rules on how superpowers exist (they can be the result of science, magic, disease, aliens, mutation, etc.) or on how they are employed (inherent, learned, bequeathed, device-driven, etc.). 11 week submission period. We will be accepting 13-15 stories, and stories should be 2k-9k words in length. Nothing shorter will be read, and our sweet spot is in the 5k-7k range. Publication is intended for Christmas 2020. Payment of $30 flat per story shall be rendered after publication. Authors will receive electronic copies and permanent discount on print purchases from RBE.

You can submit at Rogue Blades’ Submittable.

Taking Submissions: Alternate History Australia collection

Deadline: June 30th, 2020
Payment: Royalties
Theme: Alternate history set in Australia

Australia: the youngest continent in terms of recorded history, the smallest in population unless one counts Antarctica, yet still packed full of What If? possibilities. From Aboriginal civilisation to Gallipoli, from Cook and La Pérouse to Maintain Your Rage, the Land Down Under is begging to be the subject of more alternate history tales.

Now’s your chance to write one.

This anthology will be edited by none other than @Jared Kavanagh, author of the greatly ambitious and justly popular Australian timeline Lands of Red and Gold (whose first volume was recently published by SLP). His submission guidelines are listed below.

– Alternate history set in (or mostly in) Australia, or otherwise which has a very strong link to Australia.
– Aiming for around 10-12 stories with a total length of 60-70,000 words
– Average story length should be 3000-8000 words, but flexible
– Focus is on realism rather than supernatural aspects, but contact me if unsure
– Closing date for submissions is 30 June 2020.

If you’re interested in submitting an entry, first contact Jared Kavanagh at [email protected] to discuss.

Will consider all entries, but lodging a submission does not guarantee inclusion in the final anthology.

Please make sure you use the email address [email protected] to submit stories or make queries (rather than PMs or social media messages), as we want to limit the number of avenues of discussion to make sure no-one is overlooked by accident.

Come on over and give AH writing a go, we’ll throw another shrimp on the barbie for you.

Taking Submissions: The Last Elven War

Deadline: June 30th, 2020
Payment: Contributor’s Copy
Theme: How did the elves vanish?

A Collection of Short Tales

Zimbell House is holding open submissions for short tales about how the elves vanished.

Let your imagination roam and put our readers in the middle of the action. We want complete stories that explain the last war of the elven race. Who was it between? How did it start? Where did the elves go after the war ended? What realm was the war fought on? What was life like before the war, and then show us the after-effects.

  • Please keep foul language to a minimum-it loses its punch if over-used.
  • Dialogue needs to be believable, and please keep dialects/slang to a bare minimum if you must use them.
  • No head-hopping or POV changes. Pick one point of view and stick with it.
  • Please show more of the action than just telling the reader what happens.

Submissions of both short stories and novellas to this anthology are welcome, please keep in mind the minimum word count is 4,500 and the maximum word count is 19,500.

This anthology is a great opportunity to showcase emerging writers and allow them to build their professional platforms.

Submission Deadline: June 30, 2020, with a targeted release date of late August 2020.

Submit your best work. Poorly formatted and unedited work will be turned down. Please use Americanized English spellings. We will be doing light editing as necessary to fit the standards we strive to maintain.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Any work under 4,500 words will be automatically disqualified for this anthology.
  • The work must not have appeared in print or online anywhere before.
  • All submissions must be in English.
  • Each author may submit up to three (3) unique works—please submit them separately.
  • Work must be in Microsoft Word or RTF, double-spaced, 12-point font-no headers/footers.

All contributing authors will receive a free copy of the book in softcover.  Authors that are chosen for the anthology will not be paid nor receive royalties for their submission. This is an opportunity to build your platform.

Submission Deadline: June 30, 2020.

Taking Submissions: A Monster Told Me Bedtime Stories

Deadline: April 30th, 2020
Payment: Royalties
Theme: horror stories about bedtime, dreams, sleep, and nighttime in general!
Note: Reprints welcome

We’re looking for horror stories about bedtime, dreams, sleep, and nighttime in general! The parameters for this project are intentionally broad, and the possibilities are endless – monsters under the bed, horrors hiding in closets, things that go bump in the night, beings that lurk on the shore between dream and reality, nightmares that come true, scary (and original) bedtime stories, and whatever else you’re inspired to write!  (Please note: this anthology is not aimed at children, but we are open to stories appropriate for children.)

Deadline: April 30th or until filled. As payment, authors will receive royalties divided by word count.

These are general guidelines for ALL anthology submissions.

We’re looking for stories between 500-7500 words. A few words under or over won’t necessarily disqualify a story, but please keep as close to the guidelines as possible.

Stories MUST fit within the horror genre.

ANTHOLOGIES: At this time, we are primarily seeking short stories between 500 and 7500 words for themed anthologies. These submissions will be given priority.

You will be notified whether your submission is accepted or rejected. For anthology pieces, you will be notified no later than four weeks after the submission deadline. For all other pieces, you will be notified within 10 weeks of the date of your submission. If you have not received a response by that time, please email us.

Guidelines

First and foremost, all submissions must be horror.

However, we recognize that horror is a very broad and nuanced genre. To that end, we’ll read stories that fit into other genres (thriller, family drama, coming of age, science fiction, fantasy, comedy, romance, et cetera) as long as the story contains horror, and as long as horror is integral to the narrative.

ALL submissions MUST meet the following requirements (documents that do not meet these guidelines will be returned to authors for correction):

1. 12-point Times New Roman font ONLY (no other fonts, please)

2. Use “SMART QUOTES”

3. Submit all documents as an attachment in .doc, .docx, or .pages format

Submit via email to [email protected]

In the body of the email, include your name and contact information.

Unpublished stories are given preference, but we consider reprints on a case by case basis, as long as all rights have reverted to the author.

If your previously unpublished piece is accepted for publication in an anthology, we take First Print and Electronic Publishing Rights, with exclusivity for twelve months from the date of publication.

If we accept your reprint for publication in an anthology, we take nonexclusive reprint rights.

A copy of our publishing contract is available upon request.

Ongoing Submissions: Aurora Wolf

Deadline: $5 for emag and contributor’s copy if included in an anthology

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Aurora Wolf publishes stories where dreams and memories are created for the reader’s enjoyment. Our online free library and low priced print and e-formatted anthologies feature speculative fiction with strong characters and morals that uplift the soul, encourage positive thought and bring hope into our world.

In other words; the MC wins out over the forces of darkness. We want stories that will make your grandchildren proud. Entertaining works that ring with harmony, but surprise with unexpected twists to plot, rising action and a conflict that will keep a reader riveted to your story page. The story must end well.

Science Fiction: Space, Alternate Reality, Steam Punk, Nature, Post Apocalyptic(uplifting). Especially Seeking: Near Earth Space Exploration and Under Sea Exploration adventures.

Fantasy: Sword and Sorcery, Heroic, High Fantasy, Dragon and Fairy Tales.

We are not seeking stories centered about current religious controversy or politics. But we will accept spiritually uplifting works that can bring happiness to others.

No Horror, doom and gloom, extreme gore or violence. If the story ends with a tragic ending, such as Romeo and Juliet, I will probably Pass on your work.

Romance is okay if the story holds elements of Sci-fi or fantasy.

No erotica, excessive foul language, or stories of abuse. Any such stories will be deleted without reply. But then . . . maybe I will reply.

We publish stories from all English speaking nations using their own spelling and voice.

This is a family publication; we like stories for all ages. We do not want stories that are stronger than a PG rating. We want uplifting stories that inspire righteous thought and morals. Most of all we want stories that are original, packed with action, characters that show growth and endings that grab the reader.

Family oriented stories, parent with their child or sibling “stories” that show bonding and the emotions of an enduring relationship between two characters are looked upon with favor.

A good way to improve your chances of being accepted at Aurora Wolf is to make sure your story fits the guidelines in regards to the subject of the story and how well the story ends.

READING PERIOD:

Open year-round.

WORD COUNT:

2500 – 5,000   On the rarest of occasions, if a story can knock our socks off, we will consider outstanding works that fall outside of this range. Perhaps 2000 – 6500 words

Although we have great respect for flash and poetry; we are not accepting Flash Fiction or Poetry at this time.

For poetry I would suggest John C. Mannone of The Silver Blade magazine http://silverblade.silverpen.org/content/?tag=john-c-mannone

STORY SUBMISSION:

If you do not hear from us, after you submit your work, within a couple of days, please inquire. If we respond that your work is received and you have not heard back from us, within thirty days, with a Pass or Acceptance, please inquire. We work really hard to keep submission periods as short as possible. We have had computer gliches in the past, stuff happens, so don’t feel shy about contacting us.

It is very important that you use the Story Submission before your Title of the subject line. This allows us to help filter out the stories from the massive amount of promotional spam advertisements that pour in everyday.

Times New Roman, 12 pt. Font.

No underlines; use italics for italics.

Single space between paragraphs.

Submit as a .doc or .rtf  attachment.

Do not type or paste the story into the body of your e-mail, attach it please. We are not accepting submissions via snail mail.

Submissions not following these formats may be deleted without reply. There’s no guarantee that the story will be received. We try to acknowledged all stories within twenty-four hours, if you have not been contacted after forty-eight hours, please inquire.
