Compelling Science Fiction
About the theme:
The Compelling Science Fiction Short Stories collection is looking for new tales which are on the more plausible end of the SF spectrum. Time can be stretched, other worlds discovered, aliens can be present and quantum realms can be explored, but preferably all with a strong spine of internal self-consistency and dose of real-world science.

Taking Submissions: For Those Who Deserve to Exist

Deadline: December 30th, 2021
Payment: $30 and a contributor’s copy
Theme: Reclamation by marginalized individuals. Rising up, overcoming, and righting (and rewriting) transgressions
Who Can Submit: Those who identify as a marginalized individual or a person from a marginalized community.

This new open call is one that is very special to us here at Inked. The past 10 months have felt like 30 years, and it seems in many ways we are going backwards instead of making progress. So this time, we’re going to grab a spot on the stage, demand the world make room. Our next anthology, aptly titled For Those Who Deserve to Exist, will be about marginalized folk, by marginalized folk.

We will be looking for passionate, visceral stories about rising up, overcoming, and righting (and rewriting) transgressions. The general theme is that of reclaiming narratives through the genres of horror, science fiction, and fantasy. In true Inked fashion: no sugar-coating, no watered down characters or situations. No punches pulled.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

As we move forward into the age of information, what happens to our ideas of detection and crime? How do you handle it when your smart car blackmails you or you need to murder the downloaded personality of your enemy? What acts to enforce society’s norms and catch those violating them in the future? Will our definitions of crime — or punishment — change, and what new forms of either might appear?

Among the stories we hope to see:

Taking Submissions: Cthulhu FhCon

Deadline: April 15th, 2022
Payment: 3 cents per word
Theme: A convention that interacts with a Lovecraftian God, details below!

Somewhere in the world, there is a hotel on an island in the middle of a large river.  This hotel was designed and built in the 1980s, and its labyrinthine corridors and structural design make no sense at all to the modern eye.  And all the while, the deep, dark, swirling waters of the river conceal its secrets.

Unknown to all but its mad designer, this hotel was built as an altar to the Old God that rests under the dark, flowing current.  Whether that altar contains the Old God and ensures his slumber, is built to one day call him from his rest, or has some other nefarious purpose is unknown.

But it’s a heck of a place for a bunch of fans to throw a con.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: Medical Mysteries
Description: A collection of traditional Sherlock Holmes stories that must somehow connect to the theme of “medical mystery”. The topic is quite broad on purpose and we invite authors to be creative with their submissions.
