Taking Submissions: Darker Edge of Desire
Deadline: April 1st, 2013 Payment: One-time payment in the range of USD $50-70 (payable on publication) and 2 copies of the anthology. International call for original short story submissions: Darker Edge of Desire — an original anthology edited by Mitzi Szereto A trade paperback to be published by Cleis Press, USA Publication date: Spring 2014 Gothic literature has always possessed a dark attraction ripe with the promise of the forbidden and the sensual. This theme has been successfully explored in my anthology Red Velvet and Absinthe, but with a far gentler touch. In Darker Edge of Desire, I will take the sexualized Gothic and ratchet it up a few notches into the danger zone, opening the door into the darker side of lust and love that only the courageous dare to venture through. I am looking for atmospheric and high quality stories with a distinct Gothic flavour that explore our more forbidden desires and contain plenty of added kink. In these tales love and lust know no boundaries, and all nature of being—from vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, ghosts, succubae and creatures we may not even have heard of—can be found. Think Red Velvet and Absinthe, but with some very sharp edges! Submission deadline: April 1, 2013 (I’ll be selecting stories on a rolling basis, therefore earlier submissions are strongly encouraged, thoughI’ll still consider stories that make it in by the deadline). Word count: 3,000 to 6,500 What I’m looking for: Well-developed story lines and well-crafted prose told in a unique voice and containing interesting characters and settings. Stories may be set in the past, present, or future. Stories from female and male writers are welcome, as are those written from the POV of characters of any gender and containing characters of any sexual orientation. Note that sexually explicit content is...

Deadline: April 29, 2013 Payment: An eBook copy will be sent to all contributors and up to 5 paperback copies per author will be available to purchase at cost plus shipping. 50% of the royalties will be distributed between all contributors. Fear, it seems such a simple word, a common word; one syllable that can be applied to almost anything. Well, we're applying it to our new series. There is always something to be afraid of in the dark; just the dark itself can paralyze some. Is it really quite as simple as it seems? We don't think so, and we're pretty sure you'll agree. There is plenty to fear in the dark. Perhaps something lurking unseen in the shadows, a place so foreign no human mind has return from it unharmed, paranoia so pervasive it can drive the most sane individual over the edge. Or maybe you are the dark; maybe you are what we need to be afraid of... Elementary in concept? Maybe, but so much more complex when told with the finesse of a wordsmith. Tell us your tale of why we should be afraid of the dark. We love horror, we love bite, we love fear most of all. Think you can scare one of us? Give it your best shot! Accepting Submissions: March 10, 2013 - April 29, 2013 Word Count minimum: 4,000 words - nothing less will be reviewed; no reprints considered. Taking Submissions: Write Lovecraft Like Neil Gaiman
Deadline: May 1st, 2013 Payment: Exposure Only Yeah, we spent two months thinking about it, but still couldn’t come up with a better title than that. We know you’re busy setting pen to paper crafting devious, speculative (possibly metrical) verse for our recently unveiled Poetry Issue, but we also wanted to give you the what-for’s and how-to’s on the second of three special editions JDP will be publishing in 2013. Simply put, we’ve always wanted to do a Lovecraft issue. But not just the standard collection of pastiches, because there are lots of other people around doing that and doing it well. So…inspired by Gaiman stories like “A Study in Emerald” and “I Cthulhu,” we’re looking for something special…a mash-up of one literary style or theme with ol’ Howard Phillips to create something new, ideally something dark and ferocious, very possibly with a healthy dose of humor. In short, write Lovecraft like Neil Gaiman! Guidelines 1. No copyright infringement. We’d love to see Batman fist-fight Nyarlahotep as much as the next quirky lit mag, but we can’t publish characters that belong to someone else. So whatever you’re going to mash-up with Lovecraft, make sure that either a) you created it or b) it’s in the public space. Related: since Neil already went to town with Sherlock Holmes and won a Hugo for his troubles, you might want to scratch that character off your list. 2. No trunk stories. Look, we love Innsmouth Free Press and things like the Cthulhurotica anthologies by Dagan Books, but if they’ve already rejected you, we’re probably not interested. (Unless they said, “Wow, this is something like Neil Gaiman would write!” But they probably would’ve accepted it if that was the case.) Bottom line: conjure something fresh from depths of outer space for us. We want...
