Payment: 8 cents/6 pence per word for original stories, 6 cents/4 pence for reprints
Theme: stories from a diverse range of writers who have direct or familial experience of immigration and migration and its complex issues.

We are seeking stories from a diverse range of writers who have direct or familial experience of immigration and migration and its complex issues. Writers with origins from all over the world, including but not limited to Latinx, Caribbean, Asian, African, Arabic, North American and East European, are invited to challenge the reader with stories that spill out into space, parallel realms or just hidden in plain sight. The stories will explore the world from the gaze of the incoming, whether forced through slavery, economic choice, necessitated through war or oppression, or hope for a better future, examining the perspectives of displacement in a future or fantastical setting. The new stories will be set alongside older narratives – real and speculative – by Frederick Douglass, Sutton Elbert Griggs, Harriet E. Wilson, Sui Sin Far and more. An intriguing view of the conflict and anxiety between the settled and the unsettled.

Taking Submissions: Real Stories of the US Space Force

Deadline: January 22nd, 2023
Payment: New stories pay pro rate, $0.08 per word, to 10,000 words. Verse pays $50.
Theme: Science fiction short stories and fact articles illustrating current and future near-Earth space-related threats

The US Space Force has a PR problem. Several, in fact. It was not Donald Trump’s idea. It did not steal its iconography from Star Trek. It is not just a lunatic scheme to expand the military-industrial complex by sending battleships into space. Yet judging from social media, many think all these things and more.

Space has become critical not only to the military but to the economy and all aspects of daily life, and as we stand at the dawn of a new age of space commerce, that’s only going to intensify. Several nations have already developed capabilities to deny, degrade, and disrupt access to and utilization of spacebased assets, whether to degrade US military capability or as a direct economic attack.

Like it or not, the militarization of space started long ago, threats are already up there, and wherever people and their interests go next, so too will go conflict, intrigue, heroes and villains, everything that comprises good stories.

Ongoing Submissions: Seize The Press Magazine

Payment: 3 pence (GBP) per word.
Theme: Dark Speculative Fiction

Seize The Press Magazine is an anticapitalist publication looking to publish dark speculative fiction. Bleak sci-fi, dark fantasy, horror and all kinds of weird, messy, genre-defying stories that defy labels. We’re looking for stories that aren’t didactic or moralistic. We want stories where everything isn’t wrapped up neatly at the end. We want to promote a diverse range of voices from authors who write messy characters, so give us your problematic queers and your angry women—we want your difficult and morally questionable characters in unpleasant situations who don’t slide neatly into a narrow definition of positive representation and don’t fit the model minority mould.

Hidden Realms Short Stories

Open your mind to contemplate the ways in which places can be hidden – tucked away in remote corners of the world, buried underground, existing on another physical plane or a different dimension in time or on a quantum level, on another planet, accessible only to those with the secret knowledge, or even in plain sight under our noses… They may be inhabited by beings just like you and me, or creatures utterly different to us. Hidden Realms Short Stories will delve into the secret corridors, the hidden doors at the end of the alley, the hole in the trunk of an ancient oak. Your new submissions will sit alongside classic tales from many traditions, including classic literature (from Alice in Wonderland to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight) or even tales of the hidden city of Harar in Ethiopia, exploring the adventures of hidden places, secret gardens, and shadow lands in forests and mountains, in the swamps and wild places of our world, and beyond.

Payment: 10 cents per word for acceptance into the magazine, $3,000 prize for the contest (contest has submission fees, the magazine does not.) $200 for artwork
Theme: Fearless Friendship

Who would you call to bail you out of jail? Is there a friend good enough to drop what they’re doing and lend a hand? No, of course not, because they’re locked up right beside you…

Our stories are full of fearless friendships: from grand quests fighting evil to owners rescuing pets. But fearless doesn’t need to be heroic. It can be that friend who’s always up for anything. Pushing our comfort zone and forcing us to be brave, or dangerously reckless. Friends stand up for us in hard times, give us a shoulder to cry on, and fight back against our bullies and enemies. They speak their minds when we’re in the wrong. A friend will push us to be better and go further. So what, if they call and ask us to meet them in the woods with a pair of shovels…
