BENEATH: Dare You Dig Deeper to Discover the Monster?

BENEATH: Dare You Dig Deeper to Discover the Monster?

An interview with Steven S. DeKnight and Michael Gaydos

Beneath is the debut graphic novel from Hollywood powerhouse Steven S. DeKnight and seasoned artist Michael Gaydos. Let’s go beyond the surface and find out how this awesome collaboration came about and what you can expect when you pick up this multi-layered incredible graphic novel.

“I’ve always loved monsters—ghouls and ghosts, vampires and werewolves, zombies and giant radioactive creatures,” says writer Steven S. DeKnight. “The best genre stories ask questions that often elude the easiest of answers. They make you think while presenting the prestidigitation of entertainment artfully forcing the viewer or reader to challenge their own perceptions and world view.”

“My first original graphic novel just happens to be my first foray in the horror genre,” says artist Michael Gaydos. “I love creating sequential art that is full of mood, suspense, and very real character emotion. Steven’s story has all of this and more. I couldn’t be any happier with how the final product came together.”

An interview with Joshua Viola

By Sarah Elliott

Calling the gamers! So, you mastered all the levels and unlocked the hidden secrets. You love the game, so you rinse and repeat. What if you could find out what happened before the game? What is the true origin story? What are the roots of your favourite character? Well, if you’re a fan of Legacy of Kain, it’s a good job you’re already sitting tight in your gaming chair because you’ll be thunderstruck with what’s coming.

“An all-new, original graphic novel titled Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise is headed to Kickstarter later this year. Arriving in time for the 25th Anniversary of the release of the original Soul Reaver game, the publication of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise will mark the first official new Soul Reaver narrative in two decades, since 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise delves into Raziel’s past as a human Sarafan warrior and his transformation into a vampire lieutenant under Kain. The story introduces new characters, including a mysterious vampire with deep connections to Raziel and Kain. This compelling tale explores and expands the existing canon while answering long-standing questions.

The project is being helmed by writers Joshua Viola (True Believers, It Came From the Multiplex) and Angie Hodapp (Unioverse, Shadow Atlas), with interior art by Juan Samu (Star Wars, Godzilla), letters by Jeremiah Lambert (Masters of the Universe, Transformers), covers by Dave Rapoza (Destiny, Magic: The Gathering) and Aaron Lovett (Monster Train, Inkbound), with additional art by Jonny Bush (Rob Zombie, Ghost) and Ninja Jo (Star Wars, Stranger Things). Brent Friedman (Star Wars: The Clone WarsCall of Duty) is providing narrative guidance alongside creative direction and input from Crystal Dynamics, including never-before-seen ideas and elements from unreleased Soul Reaver lore.”

You get the picture. Now let’s get the detail from Joshua Viola himself. Who, you ask? Read on…

The Fantastical Five with P.L. Stuart and Willow Croft

Unfortunately, time was all too fleeting during my whirlwind visit, but I have Stuart’s promise of many more literary sequels to come! Read on to discover this author’s fascinating take on “once and future” worlds (as the borrowed saying goes), and the regals that inhabit them.

P.L. Stuart (he/him), who is an epic fantasy author, was born in Toronto, Canada. He holds a university degree in English, specializing in Medieval Literature. P.L. is an assistant editor with Before We Go Blog https://beforewegoblog.com/, and a booktuber, with his own YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thedrownedkingdomsaga7847/streams where P.L. conducts author interviews, book reviews, deep-dives into various fantasy and science fiction literary works, favourite book lists, and more.

The Spooky Six with Martin Tracey and Willow Croft

I had to put off the temptation to sit down with a pint of “real ale” with Martin Tracey, otherwise this post may never get published. (The sacrifices I make for y’all, I tell you what.) On top of that, I had to also work at not getting sidetracked into the world of football…or music…or…oh go on, just read the great interview!

Martin Tracey writes ‘Dark Fiction that strikes a chord’. Swapping songwriting for novels, music is a crucial part of his chilling page turners. Martin likes to push the boundaries of reality in his fictional works including Crime (with a twist) and flirting heavily with the Paranormal.

The terror that grips you is very real!

He has a passion for The Beatles & Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and both music and football/soccer often find their way into his stories. His other passion is ‘horror’: “Watching those Hammer films as a kid really hooked my interest,” says Martin. “All the classics like Count Dracula, werewolves and Frankenstein’s monster fed my imagination, as does anything really connected with the occult or otherworldly. And then an adaption of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot starring David Soul came along followed by the awesome offerings of The Lost Boys and From Dusk Till Dawn. Every one of those movies proved an inspiration for my dark fiction.”

Being a multi-functional author, including some non-fiction works, he has tackled topics as diverse as conspiracy theories, mind control, religious cults, serial killers, memoirs and supernatural thrillers. His wild imagination would never allow him to put pen to paper in any other way!

As well as playing about with words, music initially became the dominant career path and his love for writing materialised through his passion for writing songs. Martin went on to form various bands on the Birmingham music scene and he is the songwriter and co-performer of ‘Raging Bull’ which can be found on the album Old Gold Anthems – the songs of Wolves (available on AmazonSpotify & more), thus demonstrating his love for the club that he should commit to song a tribute to their most successful goal-scorer. It was his love for Wolves that first gave him the idea for werewolves to infiltrate a football team, however, that concept swiftly changed to vampires and his debut novel Beneath The Floodlights was born. Later, Martin went on to co-found Entity Fair with singer/songwriter Scott Stackhouse and Martin’s song ‘Saturn Rising’ won a competition on BBC Radio, resulting in them supporting Roland Gift and the Fine Young Cannibals at Birmingham’s Alexander Theatre.

Music is never something Martin could dismiss completely, but his passion for writing has evolved to penning novels of chilling suspense that bring to life many a topic, exercising that active brain of his that is ‘wired’ a little differently to most!

Martin is currently writing the authorised biography of the late, great Robin George and has provided the introductions to the fabulous Duran Duran En Scene Photo Book series 1979-1982 which contains images of early Duran Duran and the iconic Birmingham music and fashion scene of the time, all expertly taken by the keen eye of the late, talented photographer Paul Edmond.

An Interview With Nick Mamatas

Nick Mamatas Talks About ‘120 Murders’ And More!

The “Nostalgia Pendulum” theory, coined by Patrick Metzger in 2017, asserts that pop culture revolves in a thirty year cycle. This is why the 2010s came to be dominated by numerous imitations of 80s aesthetics. Look no further than Stranger Things, for example.

If this theory is to be believed then our current decade will surely come to be defined by nostalgia for the 90s, otherwise known as the Alternative Era. You don’t have to look very far to see that this phenomenon is already well under way. Next time you’re in a crowded place, just count how many Nirvana t-shirts you see.

Into this zeitgeist comes 120 Murders, a collection of dark fiction developed by Nick Mamatas which serves as a love letter to the alternative music genre of the mid 80s and 90s.

I spoke to Nick via Zoom in June about the upcoming anthology.

The Spooky Six with Deirdre Swinden and Willow Croft

While the animal lover in me would like to hear a gazillion more of Deirdre Swinden’s pet stories, that’s not really why we’re here, is it? Read on to discover what spooky shenanigans wake her up in the middle of the night!

Deirdre Swinden (she/her) likes to dwell in the realms of dark fiction. Her love of language began with a single utterance when time had little or no meaning. It was simply “Charlie.” In that word lay a child’s understanding of absolute love. Charlie was Deirdre’s first dog. She was a scrungy little black-and-white mutt. Deirdre’s fledgling creative attempts were poems about Charlie’s trotting feet and slobbering kisses. Her first short stories were devoted to Charlie’s amusement, particularly when she ate them.

As she grew, Deirdre developed a love for all things spooky. Ghost stories became a particular favorite, and she devoured every tale of terror and dread she could get her hands on. Throughout high school and college, she worked diligently to improve her writing, and completed her first full-length novel during her senior year. After a few failed attempts to find an agent and publish, she set aside her dreams of becoming a published author and made a successful living as a communications professional in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. During that time, she learned a great deal about science and developed a great love of science-fiction. Her early love of dark fiction and horror never went away, and she was soon combining the two as she picked up her creative writing once more and set to work pursuing her dream. That dream recently came true when her debut novel, Somnium, was released by Crystal Lake Publishing on May 31, 2024.

Deirdre earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Arcadia University in 2022, an MA in Communications from Southern New Hampshire University and a BA in English and Elementary Education from Wilkes University. Her short stories have been published by Grim & Gilded and Griffel literary magazines, and she’s a past winner of the Philadelphia Writer’s Conference Popular Short Story contest. She currently lives in North Carolina with her dog, Jasper.

Lesley Conner and Apex’s 2025 Kickstarter

Lesley Conner and Apex’s 2025 Kickstarter

By Angelique Fawns

Apex Magazine is where readers go to find stories that are strange, surreal, shocking, and beautiful. For almost 20 years, this publication has provided a home for some of the most thought-provoking – and sometimes uncomfortable – fiction I’ve personally read. The latest Kickstarter was awarded the coveted “Project We Love”, and has already passed its funding goal. However, the more money they can raise, the more stories Lesley Conner can buy.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/apexpublications/apex-magazine-2025

Conner is the editor-in-chief of Apex Magazine and no stranger to dark fiction. She’s the author of The Weight of Chains –a magic-filled horror and has co-edited five anthologies.  There are some very cool rewards available including a critiques from the Apex staff. The next open call for this magazine will be for unpublished authors only during August and September, 2024.
