Malarkey Books is a small press based in the middle of nowhere. Our mission is simple: publish good books. We don’t chase trends or cater to a specific niche. We just love books. We are not bound by genre, style, or investors. We are writers, publishing books that don’t fit the ever-narrowing mold of the Big 4 model. Join us.
King Ludd’s Rag is a print zine of long-form fiction. Each issue contains two stories selected by editor Alan Good—except we’re changing that up. This time we’re gonna have guest editors. We’ve lined up five past KLR contributors to select the lineup for the 2024 run of King Ludd’s Rag. Each editor gets to pick two stories for publication in 2024, and those editors are Exodus Oktavia Brownlow, Christopher Stevenson, Wayne McCray, Suzy Eynon, and Alan ten-Hoeve.
If you’re published in KLR you get $100 and a copy of the zine. Your story will appear in print first, followed by a low-priced PDF and eventually publication on our website.
The guest editors will select the stories, which will then be edited/proofread by one of our regular editors. Authors have final approval of edits and also will get a PDF of the full laid-out issue to review before publication. Malarkey Books acquires only first-time print/electronic rights. All other rights remain with the original author. You will be free to republish your story at any time in any form, with or without crediting or checking with Malarkey.
A total of ten stories will be selected; if all the guest editors hit their cap before the end of the year we will go ahead and close this folder.
Writers are under no obligation to familiarize themselves with anything before sending us a story. If you’ve got a longish story you like, go for it.
Attach one story, 4,000 words or longer. Fiction only.
Simultaneous subs are fine. Please send only one piece at a time. If we pass on one story it does not matter how long you wait before sending another one. Given the small number of authors we’ll be able to publish in KLR, we will not publish the same author in more than one issue of the zine. We are also limited by space, time, and budget, so we will have to pass on some stories we might like, and we will do so in a polite form rejection in as timely a manner as possible (but do give us at least three months before querying). We do try to be mindful of response time, but we don’t make any promises! Keep sending your story out in the mean time.
We will not run anonymous stories or anything that was generated in any way by so-called AI.
