The North American Jules Verne Society is seeking fictional short stories and illustrations for its upcoming anthology, Extraordinary Visions: Stories Inspired by Jules Verne, planned for publication in 2021. This is the first anthology of new fiction ever sponsored by the Society.

For Authors:

Extraordinary Visions: Stories Inspired by Jules Verne will contain short stories inspired by the writings of Jules Verne. Your story may be set in any time or place. You may use characters from Verne’s novels (they’re all in the public domain) or make up your own. You need not write in Verne’s style. The connection between your story and at least one of Verne’s works must be obvious and significant. We’ll accept simultaneous submissions, but let us know immediately if your story gets accepted elsewhere. We also accept multiple submissions, but it is highly unlikely we’ll publish two or more stories by the same author in this anthology.

Stories should be 3,000-5,000 words (firm).

Hard Sells

• Profane and vulgar language. Mild curses are acceptable.
• Excessive Gore and/or violence. Blood and guts are fine—if they’re part of the story and not the story itself.
• Sexual acts. Romance is acceptable.

Edition and Rights:

• Extraordinary Visions: Stories Inspired by Jules Verne will be published in electronic, trade paperback, and possibly hardback, in English. We are asking for exclusive, worldwide rights to your work for both electronic and print for six months only, and a non-exclusive right to keep your story in the anthology after that.
• Payment: Payment is 2¢ per word for original stories ($30 flat rate for reprints), paid at publication.
• Authors will also receive one copy of both the electronic and paperback versions of the anthology. Authors can buy additional books at a discount.

Submit your story to [email protected] with the story as an attachment. Follow the format guidance in the standard William Shunn format [https://www.shunn.net/format/classic/]. If your story is a reprint, please give us details of its publication history in a cover letter.

For Illustrators:

The cover of Extraordinary Visions: Stories Inspired by Jules Verne will feature a full-color graphic image evoking the scientific wonder and sense of adventure typical of Verne’s novels. In addition, the Society plans to include a black-and-white artwork to go with each chosen story, all by the same illustrator in the same style. The artist chosen for the internal artwork may be different from the cover illustrator. Submit either a cover image, or a link to your existing artwork portfolio online, or both, to [email protected]. Once stories are selected, the editors will allow the selected artwork illustrator to read them and create appropriate artwork for each.

Edition and Rights:

• For both the cover art and interior artwork, the Society is asking for exclusive, worldwide rights to your work for both electronic and print for six months from the date of publication, and a non-exclusive right to keep your artwork in the anthology after that. The Society plans to use the artwork for the book and all book-related materials (press kit, marketing materials, bookmarks, Society website, social media, etc.).
• Payment: $100 for the cover image and $10 for each internal black-and-white artwork, paid at publication.
• Illustrators will also receive one copy of both the electronic and paperback versions of the anthology. Illustrators can buy additional books at a discount.

 

Illustration Formatting:

For cover art: Please submit images at least 6 inches by 9 inches (or 12.5 inches by 9 inches for wraparound images) and 600 dpi in jpg/jpeg format. For internal black and white artwork: Please send a link to your work posted online, whether website, blog, or social media channel.

Opens: January 1, 2021

Deadline: for stories, cover art, and links to artwork samples: April 30, 2021 (11:59 pm Eastern Time), or until filled. For submission of internal artwork by the selected illustrator: one month after editors provide the (expected ten to fifteen) stories.
