Theme: Resist with every inch and every breath.

Stories of resistance and rebellion, but also of the steps in between and the change that comes after.

People around the world rise up and resist those who hold power over them. In the middle of an unprecedented global pandemic, oppression persists and is magnified as crises lay bare the systemic inequalities within societies around the world. This anthology will invite us to reflect on this moment, but also imagine a world beyond it. What will happen if the momentum of Black Lives Matter carries us through and ends state violence? What does a world post-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) look like? What does a world without any borders at all look like? What will be the result of teachers’ and athletes’ strikes? How might we forestall climate catastrophe and work towards climate utopia instead? How can a pandemic be a time to come together even as we stay apart? What does a post-oppression world have in store for us? What will be the outcome of resistance to injustice? What does the future hold?

Tell us about resistance big and small; real and imagined; rooted in reality or fantastical in nature; science fictional or science factual; historical, contemporary, or in the future. The everyday resistance of women. The power of youth and children’s rebellions. Resistance in the streets. The dismantling of white supremacy. Overthrowing colonial states. Empowering workers and undoing capitalism itself.

Give us your hopes and dreams, but also give us the messy work of making those dreams a reality. With all the work ahead of us, we’re looking for stories that spark our utopic imaginations as well as roadmaps to that brighter future. We want work that is honest about the difficulties of struggle against oppression without shying away from the incredible joy and fulfillment this work can bring.

Submission Guidelines

What we are looking for: The best way to know what kind of work we are looking to publish is to read our first anthology, Fireweed: Stories From the Revolution. We are hoping to build upon the work started by the incredible authors and poets who contributed to that volume. Also, we may be biased, but we think that if you’re the sort of person who writes about resistance then you’ll probably enjoy reading Fireweed.

Priority submission: from September 1st to October 31st 2020, for historically marginalized authors including those who are Black, Indigenous, people of color, migrants, queer, disabled, women, working class, currently or formerly incarcerated, and/or living in poverty.

Open submission: from November 1st to December 31st 2020 for all authors.

Multiple submissions: We do not accept multiple submissions. Please send us your single best work that fits the theme!

Simultaneous submissions: Because we are a small team it may take time to send notification of acceptance or rejection. Because of this, we welcome simultaneous submissions of works which are also under review elsewhere. Please let us know immediately if your work is accepted for publication somewhere else so that we can remove you from the list.

Reprints: We accept reprints of work that has been previously published. We pay a slightly lower rate for reprints. Please note that we are focusing on first publication for this anthology, so your reprint (even if it is excellent) is less likely to be accepted for publication than a non-reprint work. Please keep this in mind as you are considering which work to submit for review.

Prose submissions:

Prose should be fewer than 15,000 words. There is no minimum word count. Works may be fiction or creative non-fiction.

Poetry submissions:

Poems should be fewer than 300 lines (about 15 pages). There is no minimum line count. All forms and styles of poetry are welcome. This is a good opportunity to send us your long-form poems.

Payment: Each work will receive a flat payment of $25 upon acceptance for exclusive first publication rights, first electronic rights, and archival rights. For reprints, you will receive $15. In either case your work will be compiled into an ebook anthology available for purchase from the Lonely Cryptid Media website. You must have the legal ability to sell your work to us.

Along with payment, you will receive a contributor copy of the anthology.
