Taking Submissions: Dimension6

October 31, 2019

Deadline: October 31st, 2019
Payment: AUD $100 per story

In 2009, coeur de lion publishing released X6 — a novellanthology, featuring novellas by Margo Lanagan, Terry Dowling, Cat Sparks, Trent Jamieson, Paul Haines and Louise Katz.

X6 took us on a journey of the imagination beyond the borders of the real. That’s where Dimension6 e-magazine lives.

Dimension6 describes the multiverse of all possible people, places and events. Everything that can and will happen takes place in Dimension6.

Launched in 2014, Dimension6 features the best new stories from established authors and fresh voices from Australia and overseas.

Our readers can experience the bold vision of Dimension6 and its authors completely free of charge. As of the end of 2017, we’ve topped over 14,000 individual downloads.

Information for authors

When are you open for submissions?

We are open for submissions between 1 and 31 October 2019. Check this site and Duotrope for notifications.

What stories are you looking for?

Strong, original speculative fiction stories. The type of stories that appear in D6 will evolve with the magazine as genres blend and blur. Word limit is flexible because we’re an e-publication. Our minimum word length is 4,500 words, because we believe a real story needs at least that much space to thrive. If it’s really good we’ll publish to novella length (up to 40,000 words), but it would have to be really good from page one onwards.

We have a bias towards science fiction, but we like fantasy too especially if it’s firmly camped outside the standard fantasy tropes. For horror we’re not interested in splatter-filled gore stories. The most effective horror stories are those where you only glimpse the monster.

We have a strict reading and submission period. See below for further details.

Do you accept reprints?

Our general answer is no. We may make an exception for significant works that are not available elsewhere electronically ie because they’re out of print. Query via email.

What do you pay?

Not enough. We pay a flat rate of AUD $100 per story ($50 for reprints) but there are other benefits for authors (see next question). This is because Dimension6 is distributed free so we are making zip out of the whole exercise.

Free! Are you crazy?

We may be. But we think that free distribution has a lot of benefits. Cory Doctorow makes no bones about giving stuff away.

The paywall actually dissuades people from ‘consuming’ material. Especially with electronic publications, it is a huge disincentive. But if you give away something that is high quality and people like it, then they are going to be predisposed towards you.

Dimension6 is really a promotional tool for coeur de lion and the authors appearing in its pages. D6 will carry ads for coeur de lion books and products. Each author will also be given space to spruik their wares, hyperlink to their blogs, talk about their work and so on. And because D6 is free and is not locked by DRM software, we will give all published authors a copy of their D6 issue files to place on their website or blog or give away as they see fit (as long as they don’t charge for it). So authors get a professionally created piece of content that they can use to promote their writing.

My own space in the mag? What’s the catch?

There’s a 1,000 word limit. You can also add thumbnails eg cover images of your other work, as long as you don’t infringe copyright or public decency. And you can include urls or hyperlinks. Not much of a catch really.

How is D6 distributed?

Very easily. We’ll post each edition of D6 at www.coeurdelion.com.au. Each author can post a copy on their website as well. We’ll have a mailing list which will have an auto-distribution feature for our subscribers. We’ll tweet and FB D6 links and encourage others to do so. We’ll also ask speculative fiction websites and authors to post links to the latest copy of D6 on their sites too.

Because it’s electronic and there’s no paywall, there’s no limit to how D6 can be distributed.

Also at the end of the calendar year, we’ll produce an omnibus edition of all the stories published in that year (and all the author information) which we will sell for no more than $0.99 through a variety of ebook sites such as Amazon. We do this because some sites will not distribute free ebooks and we want D6 to be available as widely as possible.

What about copyright?

You keep the copyright of your story; you just give us permission to publish. We have a standard contract for that. Once your story comes out in D6, you can do whatever else you want with your story.

D6 is published under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives 3.0 Unported licence. This means anyone can copy, distribute and transmit D6 as long as they attribute the work back to us, do not charge for it, and do not alter, transform or build on it. More information on the licence is here — http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/

Who is coeur de lion anyway?

coeur de lion is a multi-award winning speculative fiction publisher based in Australia. Our published works have won 3 Aurealis Awards, 2 Ditmars, a Sir Julius Vogel Award and a World Fantasy Award.

D6 is edited by Keith Stevenson, coeur de lion’s publisher and editor and a past editor of Aurealis Magazine.

Okay, where do I sign up?

We accept electronic submissions direct to [email protected]. Please note we have a strict reading period so if you sub before these dates, we won’t read until the reading period starts. If you sub after a particular reading period, we’ll advise you to resubmit during the next reading period. All subs will receive an email acknowledgement.
