A home for the strange, the uncanny, and the odd.

Open Submissions

  • Issue #1 (Oct 1- Dec 1 2021)

Rules

Prose: for the most part, the rules are simple. There is, however, a lot of them.

  • Stories can be in any format except traditional prose. Stories told in forum messages? Great! Police blotters? Excellent! Receipts? If you can swing that, we want to see it!
  • More weight will be given to new and unusual formats. Part of that is the sake of novelty, part of that is just because we don’t want five epistolary stories in one issue.
  • Submissions do not have to rely entirely on text! If you would like to submit something in the form of a webpage that has considerable html/CSS going on, just make sure it’s in pdf form when you submit it. We still pay by word, but mixed media pieces are wholly welcome.
  • All work must be speculative, horror being preferred. We’d like a variety of time periods but won’t judge against you for being set in the present or near present.
  • Story lengths between 500-7500 words are accepted. You can haggle a bit on either end, but drabbles and novellas aren’t an option. (However, if you have a story you want to serialize, please query at [email protected].)
  • Payments for writing are as follows:
    $15.00 for 500-1999 words
    $20.00 for 2000-4999 words
    $25.00 for 5000+ words
After initial funds are recouped, contributors receive an equal split of 50% of royalties- the rest will be used to improve the zine for future issues, including increasing payment rates for authors.
We understand that this isn’t much, and hope to increase our rate as time goes on.
  • We read blind. While there are no penalties for having identifying information on your document, we will ask you to remove it before we read. This is to prevent any subconscious biases- we’re people, after all, we don’t read in a vacuum.
  • We’re not fussy about formatting. Shunn formatting is nice, provided you do not list any contact information or your name. As long as the font is readable, though, it should be fine.
  • Please use common sense when submitting. Any story whose moral is “and that’s when I learned the power of hate :)” is getting rejected. Sexuality is okay, on-the-page adult content is not.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted as long as you inform us if you’re accepted elsewhere, as are reprints provided you have the rights to them (and tell us they’re reprints so we don’t get confused). We do not pay different rates for original or reprinted work.
  • Submit in .pdf, .rtf, or .docx format by email to [email protected]

Artwork

  • By-and-large the rules for art are similar to those for writing
  • As always, the format must be unusual- think photographs, blueprints, diagrams for manuals, etc.
  • We are mainly looking for single or double page pieces, but if you have a longer piece you believe would fit, please query at [email protected].
  • Payments for art are as follows:
    Single page: $15
    Two pages: $20
After publication, artists will also have a share in the 50% royalty split. Again, we know this isn’t much, and we hope to increase payments in the future.
  • Want to submit but don’t have anything in mind? Contact us at [email protected]! We can pair you with an author (with both of your permission, of course) to illustrate a part of their story.
  • We also take artwork blind, so please don’t sign anything before submitting. If you are accepted, we will allow you to add a signature before the zine is released.
  • Submit as a pdf to [email protected]

In need of inspiration?

When it comes to formats, think of any of the millions of ways humans communicate information. Heck, we’ll take non-human communication means. Here’s a non-exhaustive list:

  • Academic papers
  • Technical writing
  • Medication warning sheets
  • Junk mail
  • Sales papers
  • Newspaper articles
  • Recipes
  • Knitting/crochet/weaving/what-have-you guides
  • Social media
  • Book blurbs
  • Encyclopedia entries
  • Care guides (plant, animal, rock garden, etc)
  • Reviews
