Theme: Horror-focussed stories inspired and influenced by the transgressive fiction genre

We have a very exciting announcement to make today; we are now officially open for submissions to our debut anthology, titledΒ Ceci n’est pas une histoire d’horreur (This is Not a Horror Story). The title is inspired by artist RenΓ© Magritte’sΒ The Treachery of Images, and we are seeking short stories of surrealist, transgressive fiction with a horror twist. Our cover art will be finalised and uploaded to this page in the near future.

If this has piqued your interest, please scroll down for the full details!

What are We Looking For?

First and foremost, we are looking for the unusual and the provocative. We are seeking horror-focussed stories inspired and influenced by theΒ transgressive fictionΒ genre. Short fiction in a similar vein to authors such asΒ Kathy Acker,Β J. G. Ballard,Β Poppy Z. Brite,Β William S. Burroughs,Β Brett Easton Ellis,Β Chuck Palahniuk, andΒ Hubert Selby Jr..

In terms of setting and theme, we are open to anything, so long as the narrative bears the hallmarks of transgressive fiction; protagonists that rebel against society and its norms, themes of struggling with one’s own identity, disillusionment and frustration. How those concepts are interpreted and presented is up to you. We are also open to the experimental and the abstract. Stories that play around with standard form and convention. Think short fiction similar to that found in Paul Tremblay’sΒ Growing Things and Other Stories. The more bizarre, the better.

We are not the squeamish sort, so be as wild and grotesque as you wish. Erotic content is fine too and will be considered, so long as it exists to serve the narrative. More or less anything goes, though if your story is blatantly racist or homophobic it will be instantly rejected. We encourage stories fromΒ female,Β BIPOCΒ andΒ LGBTQIA+Β authors, as we’re striving to offer a range of experiences and perspectives.

The anthology will be edited, and the stories selected, byΒ J. D. Keown. He can be found on bothΒ InstagramΒ andΒ TwitterΒ @JDKAuthor, and we can be found onΒ InstagramΒ @nightterrornovels. All updates and announcements regarding this project will be posted on each of those accounts, so give us a follow if you want to get the latest news.

Since this is our first anthology, we have set a substantial deadline. This isΒ subject to changeΒ based upon the volume of submissions we receive, but any changes will be posted both here and on our social media accounts, and any selected contributors will be informedΒ immediately. In total, we are expecting to selectΒ around ten storiesΒ for inclusion in this anthology. See below for all relevant guidelines and details, and pleaseΒ read them carefullyΒ before submitting.

In the body of the email, please also include a briefΒ third personΒ author bio, ideallyΒ three to four sentencesΒ long, which may include up toΒ two (2) linksΒ to either your social media accounts or personal websites.
