Fiction Submission Guidelines

What We’re Looking For

We seek fiction that challenges, either in content or style. We are open to all genres, as long as the work has an element of the offbeat, the surreal, the unconventional, or any combination thereof. For a better idea of what we like, please buy one of our Issues.

Contrary to our alternative leanings, we do not seek fiction (or any other work, for that matter) that is pornographic, hate-fueled, or otherwise artlessly offensive.

As far as length goes, we will consider stories up to 4,000 words long, though we prefer work in the 1,000-3,000-word range. Flash fiction is cool, too.

Submitting

  • Simultaneous submissions: Permitted, but please have the courtesy to notify us when and if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Multiple submissions: Please submit no more than one short story, or three (3) pieces of flash fiction, at a time. If you are submitting multiple flash pieces, please attach them to your email as separate files.
  • We do not consider fiction reprints.
  • Documents should be formatted as such: double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1” margins. We’re not hardline about our formatting desires; just, please, make it easy on the eyes.
  • Save your file as: “[Title of Story]_[Author’s Last Name]” (ex: “The Devil’s Pictionary_Bierce”).
  • Attach your stories to your email in either a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file. Do not embed stories in the email.
  • In the subject line of your email, please put “Fiction Submission: [Title of Story]”.
  • In the body of your email, list the word count of your story, as well as any pertinent contact information.

Compensation

We pay flat fees of $10 for accepted short fiction (>1,000 words), and $5 for accepted flash fiction (<1,000 words). Contributors will also be rewarded with one print copy of the issue in which their work appears.

Rights

We request First North American Serial Rights for all accepted works of fiction. Upon acceptance, writers will grant Milkfist first publication rights and will be compensated for their work with aforementioned payment as well as a print copy of the issue in which their work appears. We also request the right to reproduce accepted pieces in any format, in Milkfist and in any reprint of Milkfist, including audio and electronic format. Lastly, we request from the author permission to submit his/her work published in Milkfist for possible inclusion in “Year’s Best” Anthologies, et al.

Poetry Submission Guidelines

What We’re Looking For

A good poem is like a good smell: very hard to describe.  Moreover, we’re not sticklers for style or form. Free verse, ballad, ode, haiku—we’ll consider it all. Above all, we cherish viscera, the unusual, perspectives that dizzy and yet incite us. For a better idea of what we like, please buy one of our Issues.

Contrary to our alternative leanings, we do not seek poetry (or any other work, for that matter) that is pornographic, hate-fueled, or otherwise artlessly offensive.

There are no hard parameters on length for poetry, but anything longer than four (4) double-spaced pages will be a very hard sell.

Submitting

  • Simultaneous submissions: Permitted, but please have the courtesy to notify us when and if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Multiple submissions: Yes. But please submit no more than five (5) poems at a time, all attached as separate documents.

Art Submission Guidelines

What We’re Looking For

We only consider black-and-white works of art. That said, our fancies range across many mediums: photography, illustration, collages, digital art, et al. We are particularly drawn to the eccentric, to the otherworldly, to the disturbing, and, yes, sometimes the disgusting. For a better idea of what we like, please buy one of our Issues.

Contrary to our alternative leanings, we do not seek artwork (or any other work, for that matter) that is pornographic, hate-fueled, or otherwise artlessly offensive.

Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please have the courtesy to notify us when and if your work is accepted elsewhere. We do not consider previously published art; do not submit any reprints.

Nonfiction Submission Guidelines

What We’re Looking For

We seek nonfiction that sheds light on the dimmer places of the world and ourselves. Genre matters not, whether a work is a critical essay, book/album/film review, op-ed, personality profile, et al. We do, however, aim to keep our focus on the underground, underrated, and underrepresented. For a better idea of what we like, please buy one of our Issues.

Contrary to our alternative leanings, we do not seek nonfiction (or any other work, for that matter) that is pornographic, hate-fueled, or otherwise artlessly offensive.

We will consider works of nonfiction up to 5,000 words long.

Submitting

  • Simultaneous submissions: Permitted, but please have the courtesy to notify us when and if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Multiple submissions: Yes. But please submit no more than three (3) works of nonfiction at a time, attached as separate documents.

We pay flat fees of $10 for nonfiction works 1,000 words or longer, and $5 for nonfiction works shorter than 1,000 words. Contributors will also be rewarded with one print copy of the issue in which their work appears.
