Synopsis:Five years ago, my fiancé disappeared. He left me with a wedding dress I’d never wear. Left me with the kind of scars that can’t be healed. The man I built my future on vanished like a ghost. All that remained were my broken heart and a million unanswered questions.
Until a mysterious stranger arrives in town.
Tall, dark, and dangerous, Kage is as full of secrets as he is sex appeal. Though I know he’s hiding something, I’m drawn to him like a moth to flame. Heat crackles between us with every look, desire flares into passion, and I fall hard, helpless to resist.
But then I discover he’s been sent to collect on an unpaid debt from my missing fiancé….
And that debt is me.
Ruthless Creatures by J.T. Geissinger is a Mafia Romance novel. Book one of Geissinger’s Queens and Mobsters series, these books contain a great deal of spice along with its substance. Several detailed sex scenes are usually the bait for readers, but is there enough substance to keep the reader engaged?
Putting aside the various spicy scenes throughout, there is a story in these sheets. Natalie, or Nat as she prefers, lives in a small town on the California side of Lake Tahoe. It’s been five years since her fiancé, David, went on a hike and never came back. It’s become her annual tradition to get black out drunk to forget the day. This year, her best friend Sloan insists on keeping her company. They encounter a new man in town who’s perfectly tall, dark, and handsome. Nat is soon wrapped up in the mafia underworld complete with shoot outs, car chases, and mafia war declarations.
Kage, the mafioso love interest, is a fun character. His lack of filter makes his dialog the foulest, and often the funniest. He shines when intimidating or threating others. Dialog between Nat and Kage, however, is redundant. While it’s meant to be part of the indoctrination or grooming Kage is putting Nat through, it gets played out reading it over and over. The best conversations are between Nat and Sloan. Their jokes and innuendos surrounding their latest relationships, or lack thereof, makes for good laughs.
The mystery of David’s disappearance is solved during the relationship growth. The conversations with police, discovery of clues, and the solution are well done and help the reader see Nat as a character with growth potential and not just the object of Kage’s affection. In one scene, Nat is questioned about Kage by an old boyfriend, Chris, who just so happens to be a sheriff. Nat holds her ground in a way that even makes the reader cheer for her.
Ruthless Creatures is a spicy romp into the world of Mafia hit men. Along with the spice there is an equal amount of substance. If you’re looking for a book with graphic sex scenes, foul mouthed bruts, and spankings, look no further. If you’re interested in mafia meetings, car chases, or mysteries, you’ll also find that here.
