Apex Book Company Turns 20: Celebrate Two Decades of Groundbreaking Horror & Sci-Fi!

March 16th, 2025, marks a major milestone in genre publishing—the 20th anniversary of Apex Book Company! To honor two decades of groundbreaking science fiction, horror, and fantasy publishing, Apex is offering readers 20% off all available titles and issues (excluding subscriptions, merchandise, and pre-orders) from now until their anniversary date. The discount will be automatically applied to all qualifying purchases.

Founded in 2005 by Jason Sizemore, Apex Book Company emerged from Sizemore’s creative response to an early mid-life crisis and a monotonous city job in risk management software. Inspired by a local DIY fantasy zine, Sizemore initially launched Apex Science Fiction & Horror Digest, quickly gaining respect within the speculative fiction community. Over twelve issues, Apex Digest featured iconic authors such as Ben Bova, Lavie Tidhar, Eugie Foster, Cherie Priest, and Brian Keene, setting the stage for greater things to come.

Transitioning from zine to book publishing proved successful, beginning with their first anthology, “Aegri Somnia,” which earned Sizemore and co-editor Gill Ainsworth a Stoker Award nomination. Apex’s early publishing successes continued with critically acclaimed titles like “I Remember the Future” by Michael A. Burstein, “Unwelcome Bodies” by Jennifer Pelland, and “HebrewPunk” by Lavie Tidhar, each collecting prestigious award nominations.

Throughout the years, Apex Books established itself as a publisher known for nurturing new and diverse voices, publishing noteworthy titles including “The Apex Book of World SF” series, “Dark Faith,” “Rosewater” by Tade Thompson, “Stay Crazy” by Erica Satifka, and “Greener Pastures” by Michael Wehunt. Apex’s editors consistently demonstrated their keen eye for talent, championing authors like Tade Thompson, Maurice Broaddus, Chesya Burke, and Francesco Verso early in their careers.

Apex also made significant strides in magazine publishing. Lesley Conner, who joined Apex Magazine as a slush reader, quickly rose through the ranks to become editor-in-chief in 2022, driving the magazine’s revival after a hiatus due to Sizemore’s health challenges. Under Conner’s leadership, the team expanded with talented members such as Rebecca Schibler, Leah Ning, and Marissa van Uden, further strengthening Apex’s publishing capabilities.

As Apex Book Company celebrates its 20th year, readers have the perfect opportunity to explore or revisit the publisher’s rich catalog of speculative fiction. This special anniversary discount is Apex’s way of thanking readers for their ongoing support.

Here’s to many more years of publishing strange, shocking, surreal, and beautiful fiction from Apex Book Company!
