Taking Submissions: Chilling Ghost Short Stories, Chilling Horror Short Stories, and Science Fiction Short Stories

May 25, 2015

Gothic-Fantasy-3-books-FINAL-resized-600

Deadline: May 25th, 2015
Payment: 6 cents per word
Note: Sorry about the short deadline on these 3. I completely missed them until now and figured 1-2 of you might at least have something in the slush pile worth submitting or some free time this weekend. Good luck!

We’ve opened our submissions for three new print and ebook anthologies: Chilling Ghost Short Stories, Chilling Horror Short Stories and Science Fiction Short Stories. We need up to 30 stories across the three books, to bring our selection of classic tales to a modern audience hungry for good reads.

UPDATE. SUBMISSIONS CLOSING AT MIDNIGHT ON MONDAY 25TH MAY.

The Books: A Gorgeous Presentation

Each book is a 480 page anthology of gothic and fantasy short fiction drawn from the best, the fantastic and the most enthralling tales in each of the genres. The book covers will be embossed, gold foiled and printed on silver, a sumptuous offer in a crowded marketplace. The current print run is set at a minimum of 3000 copies.

Your stories will feature alongside the great storytellers of Gothic and Fantasy, including, for Science Fiction: H.G. Wells, E.M. Forster, Edgar Rice Burroughs; for Ghosts: Arthur Machen, William Hope Hodgson, Walter de la Mare, Edith Wharton; for Horror: H.P. Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, Thomas Hardy, Jan Naruda.

The Call for Submissions

We need new, or recent short stories. We do not require exclusivity. You retain copyright. We don’t mind if the story has been published online or in magazines before. As long as you have the right to license your story for an anthology, then we’re happy to read it.

Stories between 2000 and 4000 words are the perfect pitch. Anything outside this range will be considered, but will be disadvantaged.

Renumeration, Copyright and Submission

  • We pay Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) rates of 6 cents per word. We would prefer to pay via PAYPAL, although direct to bank account is fine (bank charges are crippling both to the receiver and sender, on small amounts, so Paypal is a good solution.)
  • Payment will be made within 30 days of the final advertised publication date (currently 15 August 2015, and not likely to drift too far from this).
  • Submission does not imply the right to publication. Each story will be read and assessed by the selection panel.
  • Please submit in .doc or .rtf formats, with your name and email address in the footer or header of each page.
  • We will read each story and confirm its status within 10 working days.
  • The anthologies will be published worldwide, available online and to bookstores worldwide, in print and ebook formats.

Editorial Team

The selection will be made by our panel of life-long, in-house enthusiasts of Gothic and Fantasy: Nick Wells (Publisher), Laura Bulbeck (Senior Editor) and Josie Mitchell (Assistant Editor). The final selection will be mediated by our series editors.

A Word About SFWA

Flame Tree is not yet a qualifying market, although we do pay SFWA rates. We are an illustrated publisher of art, music and lifestyle books and so have only just started to publish new fiction. It can take up to a year for a publisher to qualify, but our understanding is that once accepted by the SFWA committee, the author qualification is back-dated to the original publication month.

About Flame Tree Publishing

Originally established in 1992 Flame Tree covers a wide range of art and music titles, but has a very strong line of highly-illustrated Gothic and Fantasy books, ebooks and art calendars, from our Gothic Dreams series (Necronomicon, Steampunk, Dystopia) to our large format celebrations of Gothic Art, Fantasy Art and Dragon Art, and publications, under our Flame Tree 451 imprint, of classic fiction by Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and many more.
