SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We consider original, unpublished stories generally classified as speculative, dark fantasy, horror, weird tale, slipstream, magic realism, or fantastic fiction. We look for quality storytelling, confidence in using the English language, and character-oriented stories not to exceed 5,000 words. We also consider tightly woven flash fiction not exceeding 1,000 words.

We’re not interested in hard science fiction, epic fantasy, fan fiction, or horror featuring graphic portrayals of gore and violence, especially in absence of any redeeming qualities to the characters involved. We are not currently accepting poetry.

We accept reprints, but unpublished works receive first consideration. The author must retain reprint rights and reprints must not have been published within the last 12 months. Please disclose all previous publication information in your cover letter.

Please use 12pt. Calibri or Times New Roman with double-spaced lines and indented paragraphs. Do not use the Courier font. Use italics – do not underline. Failure to adhere to standard manuscript format expected by the publishing industry with the above variations applied will result in immediate rejection. No simultaneous submissions (do not submit elsewhere until you have heard back from us) or multiple submissions (please wait for a response before sending another story).

We cannot offer a critique of any rejected story. Please remain professional and do not be disheartened by a form rejection. As writers ourselves, we too have endured our share of rejection, but we have found this article written by the late novelist, Marion Zimmer Bradley, to be quite helpful in understanding the nature of the business.

Response time is 60 days or less, but this is subject to change. Do not query about the status of your submission until after 60 days have passed.

We anticipate being able to pay semi-pro rates of 1 to 4 cents a word for original, unpublished fiction and reprints, payable upon publication via Paypal. A final determination on our rates will be made pending the outcome of our fundraising campaign. Contributors will also receive one free copy of the issue in which their work appears.

For previously unpublished work, we claim First North American Serial Rights and First Electronic World Rights for a period of one year. For previously published work, we claim Exclusive Reprint Rights and Exclusive Electronic World Reprint Rights for a period of six months. After these times, all rights revert to the author.

To submit, please email your manuscript as an attachment using .doc, .docx, .rtf, or PDF formats. The email itself is where you should place your cover letter. In the subject line, use the following format to avoid our spam filters: “SUBMISSION: Story Title”, replacing “Story Title” with the title of your story. Please include your full name, contact info, and word-count in the document and cover letter. Also, include a short bio of no more than 50 words and publishing credits, if applicable.

Send submissions to: submissions@grimcorps.com

For general questions, or to check on the status of your submission, email editor@grimcorps.com

After submitting your story, we recommend reporting your submission to Duotrope.com.
